ARTIST STATEMENT:

This street photography series Alone Together explores how people in urban settings move and place themselves around each other without actually engaging with one another. I am drawn to the strange symmetry, and irony, of how people mirror each other’s movements and postures, like a kind of choreography, while simultaneously ignoring each other.

Is this together-but-alone phenomenon people just demonstrating normal caution, respect for others’ boundaries, a way to find “alone time” in an overpopulated urban environment? Or is it strange, anti-social behavior exacerbated by technological distractions and new societal norms? Should we be concerned?

All of these photographs were captured in San Francisco, where I live.
